Rest trimmer gently on wax and snip. Wait for the wax to cool down and solidify before doing so.
A mushroom effect on the wick is a good indication it needs trimming.
Some smaller wicks don't need trimming every burn.

My fave. Use the dipper to extinguish the flame by carefully pushing the lit wick into the melted wax. With no smoke at all. Then use the dipper to gently lift the wick back into position.
Use it also to keep jars clean by pushing down any residual wax from the sides. Pick out any debris or broken off, burnt wicks with the dipper too.
